Attala County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population was 19,661. Its county seat is Kosciusko. Attala county is named for Attala, a fictional Native American heroine from an early-19th-century novel by François-René de Chateaubriand.
As of the census of 2000, there were 19,661 people, 7,567 households, and 5,380 families residing in the county. The population density was 27 people per square mile (10/km²). There were 8,639 housing units at an average density of 12 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 58.34% White, 40.00% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.65% from other races, and 0.57% from two or more races. 1.42% of the populations were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Attala County is the only county in Mississippi with people of English descent standing at over 15%.
