May 21, 2024

BOLTON, MISSISSIPPI – Today Congressman Bennie Thompson announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has granted $420,000 to the state of Mississippi to enhance the quality of drinking water, ensuring it is clean and safe. This funding targets underserved, small, and disadvantaged communities, aiming to modernize infrastructure to meet the standards set by the Safe Drinking Water Act. The initiative also focuses on reducing exposure to harmful substances like Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and eliminating sources of lead, addressing various local water challenges.

This financial support is part of the Biden-Harris Justice40 Initiative, which prioritizes environmental justice and directs resources to communities most in need. The EPA's grant offers flexibility, enabling a wide array of projects to tackle drinking water concerns, including water quality testing, monitoring for contaminants such as PFAS, and replacing lead service lines. Additionally, the funds can bolster the technical, financial, and managerial capacities of water systems and their personnel. Infrastructure ventures supporting drinking water quality improvements, encompassing transmission, distribution, and storage, are eligible for this grant funding.
