Congressman Thompson Announces Cultural Heritage Funds Awarded to Two Projects in the 2nd Congressional District

(Washington D.C.) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announced the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, a program of the National Trust, granted $3 million in funding to 33 historic sites that represent Black history. The funds will help historic places representing African American history. The Mound Bayou Bank received $94,000, and The Medgar & Myrlie Evers Institute received $50,000.

“Protecting Mississippi’s African American historic places is critically important to our national understanding of Black life, activism and achievement,” said Brent Leggs, Executive Director, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. "While both sites hold very distinct stories, their contributions to our shared American history are undisputed. We are honored to support the protection of these sites, and ensure their stories are used to draw inspiration and wisdom for the benefit of all Americans.”

“The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute is ecstatic to receive funding fromThe National Trust for Historic Preservation to support our virtual reality program, and to tell the story of the Evers family at their family home,” said Reena Evers. “This project will give visitors an immersive experience into the lives of Medgar and Myrlie Evers, exploring their commitment to civil rights and social justice.”

“The $94,000 will help tremendously in restoration of the Mound Bayou building,” said Mayor Leighton Aldridge. “We are thankful, and the restored Mound Bayou Bank Building will serve as a tangible reminder and viable contribution to sustain our history of entrepreneurial and business excellence.”
