Former January 6 Committee Chairman Thompson Statement on the Guilty Pleas of Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro

October 20, 2023

[Washington, D.C.] – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), former Chairman of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, released the following statement on the guilty pleas by top Trump Campaign lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro:

“This week's guilty pleas by top Trump Campaign lawyers Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro in the Georgia election conspiracy case underscore the ongoing significance of the January 6th Select Committee's efforts to uncover the former President's attempts to overturn the 2020 Presidential election and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.

Mr. Chesebro's guilty plea makes clear that there was no legal basis for the fake elector scheme Trump loyalists used to object to the electoral count. Regrettably, even today, many in Congress still avoid acknowledging the obvious truth: Joe Biden won the 2020 election fairly and is the legitimate President of the United States.

I commend Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis for these significant victories in this important case, and I look forward to hearing Powell’s and Chesebro’s forthcoming testimony.”
