Press Release: Congressman Bennie G. Thompson Announces Nomination to the United States Military Academy
BOLTON, MS –Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) announces the following has been accepted to United States Military Academies for the Second Congressional District: Nicholas McGlorthan has been accepted into the United States Air Force Prep School. He will graduate from Murrah High School in May 2024. He is currently a member of the Honor Society where he has consistently maintained high honor roll status every year in high school. He has a GPA of 3.8 and has an ACT composite score of 23. He is ranked in the top 25% of his graduating class. He is a scholar, athlete and excellent leader. Nicholas is currently a member of the JROTC and was named the Cadet of the Year. He has served in several leadership capacities such as Boys’ State, where he won the position of State Senator, JCLC, Cadet Battalion Commander, Cadet S-4 Assistant, and Cadet Challenge Commander. He continues to be an active member of school activities. His interests and passions are reading, mechanical engineering, robotics and working out 5 days a week. Nicholas’s community service includes Wellfast 2022, and Campaigning for Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR). Nicholas is the son of Sharron McGlorthan residing in Jackson, Mississippi. Dylan Michael Wiley has been accepted into the United States Naval Prep School in Rhode Island. He will graduate from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science in May 2024. He is currently a member of the Honor Society where he has consistently maintained high honor roll status every year in high school. He has a GPA of 3.7 and has an ACT composite score of 28. Dylan is currently the co-captain of the cross-country and swimming teams at MSMS and the track and field captain. He has been a competitive swimmer for over 10 years and has competed in track and cross country for over 5 years. In his time at MSMS, all respective male teams have acquired trophies and medals at the regional and state level, with Dylan along with his fellow teammates gaining podium positions in their respective events. He is president of the Students Against Destructive Decisions club, whose goal is helping students make positive enriching choices in their daily lives. He is a civil rights advocate and history outreach enthusiast, with his continuous passion project of 2 years with Chuck Yarborough, a profound history teacher at MSMS, on the research of fallen African American soldiers who fought in previous wars (Civil War, World War I, and World War Two, Korean, Vietnam). Dylan hopes that his ongoing research will give these black heroes the recognition for their valor and service that has been overlooked and forgotten for so long in this country. He also hopes to continue his history research project, to honor and research at least 1,000 names in the archives before college graduation at the United States Naval Academy and join the triathlon team at the USNA. He has proven academic and leadership skills as well as excellent analytical skills. Dylan has done volunteer work for Sim Scott tutoring, 100 Black Men of Jackson swim lessons His passions are research, photography, poetry, engineering physics, and learning new philological concepts. Dylan is the son of Nelson and Debra Wiley, Jr. residing in Raymond, Mississippi.
