Rep. Thompson Secures $18,789,100 For Local Projects in Final Government Funding Package

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Representative Bennie G. Thompson announced$18,789,100 in Community Project Funding that he previously secured for Mississippi’s 2nd District in the House spending bill, which has been included in the final 2023 appropriations funding package.

This funding represents a Christmas surprise to many of the entities awarded, and Congressman Thompson is elated to announce the funding because it responds directly to some of the most pressing needs in Mississippi. “I am proud to have secured $18,789,100 in Community Project Funding in this bill, which meets long overdue community needs in Mississippi’s 2nd District,” said Rep. Thompson. “These investments will create jobs with better pay, strengthen our communities, and start to tackle climate change.” Rep. Thompson championed funding for 13 projects that will directly benefit Mississippi’s 2nd District residents. These include the following allocations:

  • $2,000,000 for the Bolivar County Utilization Project
  • $3,200,000 for the City of Clinton for a Regional Wastewater Project
  • $1,125,000 for the City of Fayette Municipal Safety Complex
  • $2,000,000 for the City of Greenville, MS for facilities and equipment
  • $600,000 for the City of Rolling Fork Community Utilization Complex
  • $1,664,100 for the Coahoma Community College in Clarksdale, MS for campus safety
  • $500,000 for the Coffeeville's Recreational Park
  • $375,000 for the Emmett Till Historic Intrepid Center Project
  • $750,000 for the Emmett Till Tutwiler Museum Welcome Center
  • $2,250,000 for the Mississippi Delta Community College Training Academy
  • $2,000,000 for the Sunflower County Business Improvement District
  • $225,000 for the Rev George Lee Museums Project
  • $2,100,000 for the Union Station Transit Hub Project

Mayor Simmons of Greenville, MS; Dr. Valmadge Towner, President of Coahoma Community College; and Dr. Tyrone Jackson, President of Mississippi Delta Community College, all offered their gratitude for the funding with the following quoted messages.

Thompson, for supporting the economic vision of Greenville, Mississippi through the delivery of federal funds for facilities and equipment,” said Mayor Simmons. “This announcement highlights the continued importance of federal and local partnerships in spurring economic growth.”

“We are appreciative of the support given to Coahoma by Congressman Thompson and the federal government,” said President Towner. “Safety of our students, staff and constituents is of foremost importance. We are eager to use resources from this grant in a way that will enhance our capacity to continue having safe campuses. It is uplifting to know that we can always count on our Congressman to partner with us as we provide educational services to our communities.”

Mississippi Delta Community College sincerely appreciates the support of Congressman Bennie G. Thompson and the federal government for supporting our law enforcement training academy (LETA) through this funding opportunity,” said President Jackson. MDCC has been committed to training law enforcement officers from across our state since 1998. This funding opportunity will have tremendous impact on our LETA training program by providing additional space to house more cadets and offer more advanced training courses annually.”

This twelve-bill funding package will create good-paying American jobs, grow opportunities for small businesses, and provide a lifeline for working families. The funding will continue to reverse decades of disinvestment in our communities.
