Trump’s Attack on Medicaid

1. Trumps Actions: Medicaid Funding Cuts

  • Under the Trump Administration, House Republicans are pushing to cut $2 trillion from federal Medicaid funding putting more than 193,000 constituents in the Second Congressional District at risk for coverage. (Source: House Committee on the Budget, MS-02, How the Republican Budget Betrays the Middle Class)
  • Mississippi chose not to expand Medicaid, even though the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would have covered 90% of the costs for those who qualify. (Source: Kaiser Family Foundation analysis of Medicaid spending data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicaid Budget and Expenditure System (MBES))

2. Impact on MS-02: Widespread Health and Economic Hardships

  • Where patients matter, there are 193,418 Mississippians in the Second Congressional District that would be affected by these Medicaid cuts.  This means about 128,030 children, and more than 33,000 seniors would suffer.  (Source: House Committee on the Budget, MS-02, How the Republican Budget Betrays the Middle Class)
  • Where services and programs matter, this threatens home and community-based services, CHIP (Children Health Insurance Program), dental, vision, mental health, nursing homes, pre-and post-natal care for women, and the new eligibility enrollment rules for Medicaid.  All this would lead to a rise in the number of uninsured Mississippians.
  • Where the impact would appear, there will be more rural hospitals closing, lack of access to care, growing problems in health conditions, more deaths, and a reduction in services across the spectrum.

3. Redirecting Services for Affected Constituents
