Trump’s Attack on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)

1. Trumps Actions: Cuts to SNAP

  • Under the Trump Administration, House Republicans are pushing to cut $230 billion in SNAP funding, putting more than 139,000 constituents in the Second Congressional District at risk of losing coverage. SNAP provides monthly benefits to low-income families to pay for groceries so they can afford the nutritious food essential to health and well-being.  (Source: House Committee on the Budget, MS-02, How the Republican Budget Betrays the Middle Class) (Source: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities)

2. Impact on MS-02: Hardships for Families, Farmers, and Local Economies

  • Families, working parents, seniors, veterans, and homeless people that are eligible for SNAP would not be able to put healthy food on their tables.
  • If cuts to SNAP take effect, community programs and schools will struggle to fight food insecurity, while farmers’ markets and grocery stores will see a decrease in sales.

3. Redirecting Services for Affected Constituents

  • Constituents who rely on SNAP in MS-02 are encouraged to contact the Mississippi office for SNAP at (800) 948-3650.
  • If you need further assistance, call my Bolton office at (601) 866-9003.
