BOLTON, MS – Today, Congressman Bennie Thompson announced multiple federal transportation and safety grants awarded to communities across Mississippi’s Second Congressional District to improve roadway safety, strengthen planning efforts, and support aviation infrastructure. Hinds County — Safe Streets: Robinson Road Project Hinds County will receive $20,000,000 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program to reconstruct a 2.75-mile segment of Robinson Road between Interstate 220 and West Capitol Street in Jackson. The project will add ADA-compliant sidewalks, bicycle lanes, improved lighting, access management, and pedestrian safety features to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes along this high-risk corridor. Bolivar County — Bolivar County Safe Streets Project Bolivar County will receive $200,000 in SS4A funding to conduct data collection, crash and speed analysis, and demonstration activities to update its countywide Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The project will help guide future safety improvements across the county. Tunica County — Tunica County Safety Action Plan Tunica County will receive $248,000 to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, including a five-year crash analysis, public engagement, identification of high-injury roadways, and a web-based dashboard to track safety performance. Carthage and Leake County — Airport Improvement Project The City of Carthage and Leake County will receive $137,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration to construct a new sponsor-owned aircraft hangar at the Carthage-Leake County Airport. The project will support airport self-sufficiency and local economic development. |
