Thompson Statement on Mueller Russian Indictments

February 16, 2018 (WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the following statement on Special Counsel Mueller's indictment of Russians for election interference:

"Today's indictments of 13 Russian nationals and three Russian entities underscore the Russian government's commitment to interfere in our democratic processes and destabilize our democratic institutions, making implementation of the Congressional Task Force on Election Security's recommendations all the more urgent. In 2016, the Russians engaged in a full on attack on our democracy. This methodical, multi-million dollar enterprise struck at our democratic foundation, sought to exploit political divisions, disenfranchise minority voters, and erode the confidence of the American public. The Russians exploited our freedoms of expression and assembly with their bot campaign and by organizing in-person rallies on our soil. The time for Congress to act is now. With the release of the Congressional Task Force on Election Security's report and the introduction of H.R. 5011, the Election Security Act, the Democrats articulated a clear path for protecting our democracy. Regrettably, my Republican colleagues have not taken this issue seriously. I urge my Republican colleagues to wake up, acknowledge the Russian government's efforts to divide and destabilize us, and take steps to protect our democracy."
