Congressman Bennie Thompson Announces New Fiscal Year 2024 Grants from the U.S. Department of Education to Support Diversity in Special Education Personnel to Jackson State University
Bolton, MS – Congressman Bennie Thompson is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has unveiled new Fiscal Year 2024 grants aimed at enhancing diversity among personnel serving children with disabilities and their families. These grants are part of the Preservice Expansion/Development initiative, specifically targeted at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Among the recipients, Jackson State University has been awarded $149,407 to support its efforts in expanding and developing preservice training programs in special education. This grant will aid Jackson State University in preparing a diverse and well-prepared workforce to meet the needs of children with disabilities. The project is called Project Audiology, which aims to address the shortage of personnel with clinical doctorate degrees in audiology. The project focuses on increasing the number of multilingual and racially and ethnically diverse audiologists who are fully qualified to serve children with disabilities, particularly those with hearing loss. Project Audiology emphasizes providing equitable, evidence-based, culturally, and linguistically responsive instruction, interventions, and services that improve outcomes for children with disabilities. This includes children of color with disabilities and multilingual children with disabilities, ensuring their full and equitable participation, development, and learning. Congressman Thompson applauded the Department of Education's commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity in special education. “This initiative is a significant step towards ensuring that children with disabilities receive the support and services they need from a diverse and culturally competent workforce,” said Congressman Thompson. “By investing in our HBCUs we are not only supporting our educational institutions but also enriching the lives of children and families who benefit from these essential services.” |
