February 11, 2020

WASHINGTON—U.S. Rep. Thompson speaks on the importance of Census 2020.

You can download the video of his full speech here and read a transcript of his remarks as delivered below.

You don't need to be an inventor, a scientist, or a Member of Congress, (Governor, Mayor, etc.) to shape your future of your community. You just need to be someone who cares about your community.

By being counted in the 2020 Census, you will help influence funding for local school programs, emergency services, and roads in our community.

Did you know that census data helps communities respond to natural disasters and secure funding for hospitals and fire departments?

Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year.

The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.

The census provides critical data that lawmakers, business owners, teachers, and many others use to provide daily services, products, and support for you and your community. Every year, billions of dollars in federal funding go to hospitals, fire departments, schools, roads, and other resources based on census data.

Once you receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census, there are 3 ways to respond: online, by phone, or by mail.

We all count, and we all get to shape our future by participating in the 2020 Census.
